Accompaniment for RIAM Exams
Accompaniment is required for all Woodwind, Brass, Bowed-String, and Voice exams, whether taken live or as a recorded submission, unless otherwise stated in the syllabus.
Woodwind, Brass & Bowed-String Instruments
For all graded exams:
- List A and List B pieces must be performed with accompaniment, unless clearly indicated otherwise in the syllabus.
- Performing these pieces without accompaniment (where required) will result in no marks being awarded.
Classical Singing & Music Theatre
For all graded exams:
- All songs must be accompanied, unless otherwise indicated in the syllabus.
- Performing without accompaniment (where required) will result in no marks being awarded for those songs.
Live Exams & Recitals
- Candidates must perform with a live accompanist.
- Music Theatre candidates may perform one song with a backing track, if preferred.
Recorded Exams & Recitals
Candidates may choose from the following accompaniment options:
- Live piano accompaniment
- Pre-recorded accompaniment or backing track
- A combination of both
Failure to include accompaniment where required will result in no marks being awarded for the relevant pieces or songs.
