These general guidelines explain how we assess the key areas of your music exam.
While they don’t cover the finer technical details specific to individual instruments—such as intonation, pedalling, or breath support—they are designed to give a broad overview of our marking approach. As with all artistic assessment, there is some subjectivity involved, and small variations in examiner marking may occur. However, your examiner’s comments should always give you a clear sense of why a particular mark was awarded.
For Grades VI–VIII and the Senior Certificate, we expect a more advanced level of musical understanding and technical skill.
