Practical Grades at a Glance

The classic RIAM Music Exam - three graded performance pieces followed by Supporting Tests.

  • Perform three grade-appropriate pieces along with supporting tests of scales & arpeggios, sight-reading, aural test, and theory questions.
  • Follow RIAM Exams Syllabi designed to guide students through a structured progression of technical skills and musical awareness.
  • In-person or video submissions, expert feedback and RIAM Spotlight Awards eligibility.

Practical Grade Exam Structure

Practical Grade Exams include the following components:

  • Performance: Candidates prepare 3 set pieces from RIAM syllabus
  • Technical Work: Scales, arpeggios, and appropriate grade-level exercises
  • Sight-Reading: Assessing the ability to interpret music at first sight 
  • Aural Tests: Developing listening skills essential for musical growth 
  • Theory: Assessing understanding of the pieces performed
