RIAM’s online Theory Exams offer a flexible, accessible way to build the knowledge that supports
musical and dramatic performance. Whether you’re preparing for early grades or advanced levels,

Taking Your Exam: What to Expect
Preparatory Grade to Grade V (Music)
- Exams are taken fully online—no printing or uploading required.
- The exam includes 50 timed questions (a countdown timer appears on screen).
- Candidates can review and edit answers before submitting.
- Results are given immediately after submission.

Grade 6, 7, 8 and Senior Certificate Music Theory
Exam papers must be downloaded in advance and completed between 12pm - 6pm on the day of the exam. Once your paper has been completed you must scan the document and upload before 6pm.
Candidates should follow this step-by-step process:
- Download the correct Grade paper from the links immediately below
- Print the paper off in advance, and then complete the paper on the day of the exam
- Upload a scanned version of your completed exam by 6pm on the day of the exam

Drama & Communications Senior Certificate
- The exam is completed entirely online—no printing required.
- You will read and answer questions on screen.
- Candidates may find it helpful to draft answers on paper before typing.
- Candidates aged 16 and under should have an adult present during the exam.
Accessible options are available for candidates with special needs.

- Your login details, which will be sent before the exam
- A quiet space with enough time to complete the exam

- Paper and pencils or pens
- A scanner or scanning app for uploading your completed paper
